  • ADSL filters

Preparing for your Net Idea ADSL Installation

ADSL high speed Internet shares your existing telephone line with your regular telephone service, splitting the line into two distinct channels - one for voice and the other for the high speed data connection. The high speed data connection uses a higher frequency range not used in normal voice communications. It does this in a way that allows you to use the telephone while on the internet. In order for this to work a device called a filter is needed to block the ADSL signal so that it does not interfere with your other analog devices such as answering machines, fax machines and phones.

A filter must be placed on every jack that has an analog device connected to it EXCEPT for the ADSL modem itself. Using a filter on the ADSL modem will prevent the internet from working.

Common setups

Common Setups

Setting up the ADSL Modem

Connect the external AC adapter to the round power outlet on the back of the modem. Connect the power supply into your wall outlet or surge protector.

Connect the grey phone cable into the DSL port on the back of the modem. Connect the other end of this cable into the phone jack in the wall.

Modem Back

IMPORTANT: The phone cord must go directly from the wall to the modem without connecting through a filter. If the modem is connected through a filter, ADSL will not work.

Connect the grey Ethernet cable into the LAN port in the back of the ADSL Modem. Connect the other end into the network port in the back of your computer.

If you are using a router to share the internet connection between multiple computers connect this cord to the Uplink or Internet port of the router.

NOTE: There should be nothing connected to the Console port in the back of the modem.

Turn the modem on using the switch in the back. The orange power light will go on and other lights will flash as the modem goes through its initialization procedure.

Modem Lights

After approximately 45 seconds the DSL Link light will stop flashing and go solid and the DSL ACT light will start flashing rapidly. The LAN lights will either blink or go solid depending on the speed of your network card but should not be off. At this point your ADSL should be ready to use.

NOTE: If after one minute the DSL link light is not solid or the DSL ACT light is off, the modem is not getting an ADSL signal.

Check the following:

  • Check wiring for loose connections
  • Ensure that the phone line is not connecting through a filter.

Setting up your computer

In most cases there is no setup required on your computer and your ADSL high speed Internet will just work. Open your favorite web browser and try viewing a website. If you get a 'Network Access Denied' page, your computer needs to be registered on our network. Please call The Net Idea with the MAC and IP address shown at the bottom of the Access Denied page.

If you get an error saying 'This Page Cannot be Displayed' or your computer is still trying to use your Dial-Up connection please call The Net Idea and we will help you change your settings so your computer recognizes your ADSL connection.
